Clinton Horton Landreth, age 80 of Cliffside, died Sunday, January 27, 2019 at Hospice of The Carolina Foothills in Forest City following a brief illness. Horton was born in Seneca, South Carolina and was a son of the late Reverend Claude Verner Landreth and Lydia Crooks Landreth. He was a member of Goodes Grove Baptist Church and a former member of Cliffside Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and member of the Stewardship, Personnel, Building, Nominating, and Pastor Search committees for many years. He attended Gardner Webb College and was a graduate of John A. Gupton College of Mortuary Science in Nashville, Tennessee. He was a licensed funeral director and embalmer for over fifty years and the former owner of McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home in Cliffside where he served with compassion and professionalism. He was truly devoted to his work helping families in the most difficult times of their lives and formed many lasting and treasured friendships. Horton also served his community in many ways including being a charter member of the Rutherford County Rescue Squad, past president of Chase Lions Club, local Board of Directors of First Citizens Bank, and Board of Directors of Cleco Medical of Shelby, NC. He was also elected five times as Rutherford County Coroner and held this position for more than seventeen years. Horton was a member of the National, North Carolina, and South Carolina Funeral Directors Association and a member of The Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Whit Landreth, Verner Landreth, Lewis Landreth, and sisters, Willie Mae Sanders and Edith Moore. Survivors include his wife of sixty years, Jerene Bailey Landreth, his daughter, Tammy Landreth Webb and husband Dee of Cliffside, two granddaughters, Kayla Webb Hope and husband Jason, Holly Webb Hensley and husband Drew, two great- grandchildren, Jaxon Hope and Annie Kate Hope, as well as two foster great-grandchildren and his faithful dog Roxie. The funeral service will be held at 2 PM Thursday, January 31, 2019 at Goodes Grove Baptist Church with Reverend Robby Hensley, Reverend Larry Fleming, and Reverend Mike Elgin officiating. Interment will follow in the Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 until 8 PM Wednesday evening at Eggers Funeral Home of Cliffside. The family request that all local funeral directors and colleagues serve as honorary pallbearers.
