Clyde Baxter Gibbs, Sr., age 81, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, surrounded by family after a brief illness. Born in Hyde County on October 18, 1942, to the late Willie K. Gibbs and Evon Douglas Gibbs, Clyde attended East Hyde High School and then joined the U.S. Army, serving during Vietnam. After returning, he married Connie Brown Gibbs on June 26, 1966. Clyde worked for Mr. Pratt Williamson at Williamson Funeral Home and then Paul Funeral Home. He then went to work for NC Natural Gas Company for 26 years, retiring in 2005. After retiring, he returned to Paul Funeral Home until 2023. Clyde attended Wanoca Presbyterian Church in Washington.
Clyde is survived by his wife of 59 years, Connie Brown Gibbs; two sons, Clyde Gibbs, Jr. and Nicole of Morrisville, NC and Cory Gibbs and Toni Lynn Dickerson of Pinetown; one daughter, Candace Cox and Donnie of Washington; five grandchildren, Holly Latham, Amanda Latham, Addie Gibbs, Tilly Gibbs, and Brooklynn Gibbs; two step grandchildren, Janece Vick and Lauren Vick; one great grandchild, Piper Williams; one brother, Jessie Gibbs and Mant Nae of Fayetteville and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He is preceded in in death by his daughter, Gloria Denise Gibbs; brother, Robert L. Gibbs; sister, Jo Ellen Cutrell; and his mother and father.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Thursday, January 30, 2025, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington and other times at the home.
A memorial graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, February 2, 2025, at Soule Cemetery in Hyde County, officiated by Travis Boyd.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to a Veteran’s organization of one’s choice.
