Desmond Smith Sr

Desmond Gray Smith Sr. age, 99 of Moncure, died Monday (2/5/2018) at his home. He was born on May 11, 1918, in Pittsylvania, County Virginia, son of the late Charles Augusta Smith and Nancy Elizabeth Williams Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Garland Smith, Clarence W. Smith, Carlos A. Smith, Frank Smith and Garnett Smith. Sisters, Ethel S. Fain and Hazel S. Slaughter. His wife of 60 years Ella Gentry Smith, an infant daughter and son Desmond Gray Smith Jr. Four grandchildren, Lisa Rose Burchette, Gary Dale Burchette, Jeffery Wayne Burchette and Ronald Eugene Munday Jr. He was an co-owner and operator of the Smith Funeral Home of Moncure for many years before his retirement. He was Past President of the Moncure Lions Club and was member of the Moncure United Methodist Church. He was one of the founding board members that helped bring county water into the Moncure Community. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00pm Saturday at the Moncure United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Brady and Rev. Stephen Woods officiating. Burial will follow in the Broadway Town Cemetery. Surviving are his children, Garland E. Smith (Joyce) of Broadway, NC, Clara Smith Burchette of Ronda, NC, Sandra Smith Munday of Leland, NC, Linda Smith Smith of Moncure, NC and Donna Smith Oldham (David) of the home. Daughter- in- law Sue Bentley Smith of Glenville, NC. Grandchildren, April Smith Collins (Donald), Mary B. Long, Brenda B. Bautista ( Magdaleno). Jamie Lee Burchette (Rhonda), Larry Dean Burchette, Janice Leigh Valdez-Rodriguez (Jorge), Jeannie Rebecca Burchette, Kevin Gray Smith (Susan), Kenny Ray Smith (Peggy), Desmond Gray Smith III (Anna), Teresa Smith Julian (Allen), Shari Hudspeth Guyette (Kenny),Rhonda Munday Faust (Michael), Shannon Munday Overcash (Brian), Ray Desmond Smith (Charity), Sean Thomas Smith (Tammi), Amber B. Oldham (John), Colleen Karson Oldham, Emilee Paige Oldham- Ingold (Matthew) and Sara Mackenzie Oldham, 45 great grandchildren, and 34 great great grandchildren. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the funeral services at the Moncure United Methodist Church and other times at the family home.
