Lucille Warren

Lucille McMillan Warren, 98, died peacefully at home in Fayetteville early Thursday morning May 16. She was born in Fayetteville in 1921 to Alvin B. and Mamie McMillan. She attended Fayetteville city schools, and after graduating Fayetteville High School attended Peace College in Raleigh. During World War II, she worked at Fort Bragg in the Registrar's office, for Dr. Murray Bowen, who would become an important psychoanalyst and author, and a lifelong family friend. She married Charles (Charlie) Warren, eventual owner and manager of Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home. The couple soon started a family, and lived first on Woodcrest Road and later Skye Drive in Fayetteville. Lucille was a lifelong member of Highland Presbyterian Church, where she at one time sang in the church choir and taught Sunday school. She was active in the Fayetteville Garden Club and Pine Needles Garden Club and in what she and the other members simply called Book Club. She and Charlie enjoyed travel with friends, including Ann and Coy Brewer and Marjorie and Wilbur Clark. For years Lucille traveled annually to New York City to attend theater with close friends Iris Thornton, Dorothy Weeks, and Dell Holstein. The family was involved in the show horse world, which led to many happy social occasions with close friends Rosalie and Raymond Renfrow, Gene and David Ray, Lou and Jim Nance, and Betty and Dennis Williams. Lucille is survived by her children, Charles Warren, Jr. and his wife, Katherine Kimball, of Boston, Massachusetts; daughter, Lucy Warren Chambers, of Fayetteville; grandchildren Charles Bennett (Ben) Chambers and his wife, Reston Jones Chambers, of Fayetteville, Cameron McMillan (Cam) Chambers, of Chapel Hill, and Margaret Warren (Maggie) Chambers, of Raleigh; great grandson Charles Bennett Chambers, Jr.; and Lucille's sister, Betty McMillan, of Fayetteville. A funeral service will be held Monday, May 20th, 2 p.m., at Highland Presbyterian Church, with the family receiving friends 1-2 in the church Fellowship Hall. Burial will follow the funeral service, at Cross Creek Cemetery. The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Rosalee Brown, Mae Hickman, and Anjelika Williams for their care.
